I guess it’s my own fault for not reading the synopsis, but from the title, I thought this was just about general decluttering. I’m not “downsizing,” I’m just a hoarder that needs to get up and clean.

This approach to handling 'stuff' was really helpful to me. Identifying things as treasures, useful items, trash, or malignant items made sorting so easy. If something makes you sad every time you see it -- even if it was given to you in love -- let it go! If you have 55 treasures that basically commemorate the same thing (I'm looking at you, children's school projects) then let *all* but the very best go! Have in your life what you really want there.
I believe Walsh wrote this book in response to his own experience with dealing with siblings when having to downsize his parents home. Reading his account of that process really helped me frame my own attachments and how I do and will deal with other people's treasures.
This is the first book I've encountered that acknowledges that we sometimes have completely irrational reasons for keeping items. Somehow that acknowledgement freed me. (I'm not crazy!) The book is a great guide for identifying reasons for attachment and gives good strategies on how to let go.
