I enjoyed this short story, but I enjoyed it more when David was in the picture. I clearly have a favorite.

“Is that it then? Are we ruined?”

My brain can't comprehend that this is the same author who wrote A Dowry of Blood.

I thought this had a great premise and that it was going to be a quick, fun read with great writing. The best thing about this was the illustrations (10/10 to the illustrator).

The characters were insufferable, and then you're telling me the entire issue was solved by them banging? Okay.

Also, the bi-phobia is just not it.

I will not pass up any excuse to spend more time in the cozy Boston brownstone with Rhys and Moira. They are quickly becoming my favorite fantasy poly couple and I really enjoyed getting a glimpse into their early relationship and how they met. Getting to watch David and Moira bicker is the cherry on-top knowing what we know will happen in Ascension.

I wasn't the biggest plan of the timeline jumping around, I wish this book was written in a more chronological order, but it didn't take away from the story. I am glad S.T. Gibson decided to write about the initial fight that drove a wedge between Rhys and David before Evocation takes place, it'll make my re-read of the series a little more fun next time around.

If you could not tell, I would not recommend reading this book if you haven't at least read Evocation.

Round this up to 4.5. I enjoyed this novella quite a bit. And while I’m not a huge fan of polyamorous couples, I will be reading the next book because I adore Moira and want more of her story. And David and Rhys.
lighthearted medium-paced

He touched the blade to his forehead and then to his belly, muttering words Moira couldn't understand in a low voice he had never had occasion to use with her. It sounded like kingliness, like silver hard as steel."

👩🏾‍❤️‍👨🏻Gibson truly has talent, her prose is lyrical to the point of poetry - each metaphor unfurls beautifully.

💍 What struck me most was the honesty of the relationship at the novel’s core. Rhys and Moira’s marriage feels raw, displaying truth that is rarely captured with rare authenticity (despite the demons).
That said, coming to Odd Spirits directly after Evocation, I didn’t find much new ground explored. The themes echo beautifully, but there’s a sense of déjà vu.

👹 The full colour illustrations in the eBook were an unexpected delight.  My favourite was the image of a spirit seizing David’s wrist.  peaking of David, he often gets an unfairly harsh reception. Yes, he’s sharp-tongued and unapologetically sassy, but here I’m not sure he deserves the hates he got here. (Though its not my feelings he's playing with)

"With all due respect Rhys, that attitude is exactly why we broke up"

Keen for the next one.
