This book is infinitely better than the first one. I really disliked book #1, but I am glad I read this one. We learn a lot more about the world that Walter created, there is a broad cast of characters, and my issues with book #1 were mainly resolved. If you want a sapphic adventure fantasy, then I would suggest it.

i'm gonna be so real, alyce consistently got on my nerves throughout this book. I know it was mortania influencing her a lot of the time but my god lady, own up to the fact that you went a little far. I mean I was in full support of her khalessi rampage in the last book but bleeding graces was a bit much lmao.

still really enjoyed this. can't wait to read crimson crown next.

All-around excellent, as far as fairytale retellings go. This one didn't quite win me over a much as Malice did, especially with regards to the romantic plot (although I do think it was handled in a way that made the most sense to the story), I still ripped and tore through it, and was pleased with the overall experience. In particular, I liked that the Alyce of Misrule was much darker and fangier than her predecessor, and while some of her misdeeds could be sympathized away or excused, not all of them could—and that, I think, makes for a much richer and more complicated reading experience than making our heroine's misdeeds entirely sympathetic. Yet, I always felt like I could relate to and root for her, which is some truly deft writing on the author's part. Sort of wish there was a third book to look forward to, honestly!

Also, picked up on a few lines of dialogue in here that made me wonder if Walter and I watch the same TV shows...not implausible given that queer women do seem to watch the exact same damn five TV shows, and also, I recall reading a line of dialogue in Katherine Arden's Winter of the Witch that made me go "was that a frickin' line from The Last Jedi?". Reader, it was.

Although the love story was done so well and ventured into the near philosophical with all the discussion of true forgiveness and change, i’m a sucker for love and explicitly happy endings, and if you want that this book is not for you. what this book does do beautifully however, is the epic stakes of everything- at every turn there was peril and excitement. In addition, the description present throughout the book is exquisite, if, at times, exhaustive. i could taste the food, revel in the parties, envision the court! i do wish there was more character development with Rose and Derek. I never quite understood what the author was doing with Rose- she seemed like a character desperately trying to be three dimensional but failing at every turn. in the end, she was just a caricature. Derek, in a similar vein, was incredibly frustrating, although i don’t hate him nearly as much as other reviewers. all in all a very good read and one i definitely recommend to sapphic fairytale lovers (or any fairytale lover)! it is a beautiful story and inventive retelling of sleeping beauty. alyce and aurora are incredible characters and i will miss them and their love! ♥️
