I tried reading TMI back in the day, and it just never really grabbed me as a reader. However, I always had people telling me to try The Infernal Devices and I am so glad they did! I can't believe these books have existed for so long and I never read them.

The setting of Victorian London is very interesting to me as a history nerd, and I overall found these characters, especially Jem, Will, and Jessamine, to be very compelling. I admit Tessa was not my favorite at the beginning, but I really grew to appreciate her at the end (the fight at the end had my jaw on the floor!)

Although overall I enjoyed the setting/atmosphere, I do have a couple issues with this book. Mostly the plot had me compelled, although the pacing was a bit odd. The story does drag in places, mostly due to the first book doing much of the world building. As stated above, I didn't read TMI, so some things that might have come naturally to readers were new info to me. Additionally, some of the story beats did come back predictable to me, and some characters felt like a plot device and tropey more than a nuanced development.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story though! The jokes genuinely made me laugh, there were some beautiful prose in there, and I look forward to reading the next book!

I loved this book so much. It was mysterious, full of action and it was very suspense. The world of the shadow hunters and downworlders was very well thiught through with lots of different powers and characters from both the angel and demon side.
Tessa was a brave and courageous character, who had a very unique power where she could Change. I am really curious to find out what Tessa actually is and the rest of her powers. Her brother, Nate, unexpectedly betrayed Tessa, by conspiring with Mortmain. At this point I felt bad for Tessa as she still loved Nate even though he doesn’t anymore.
Will was an interesting character, with major mood swings. The best chapter with Will was when he fought with De Quincey. This is because it was intense and done so well I felt like I was actually there watching the fight. I really want to find out what happened to his parents and what he was talking about to Magnus Bane in the epilogue.
Jen was a sweet character who I thought we didn’t see enough of. I really hope in the next book he is in it more, so I get to find out more about Jen. I also feel really bad for him and his illness considering there is no cure and he is suffering badly.
Overall, I thought this was a great book and I highly recommend for any YA Fantasy readers.

I started this book a LOOOOONG time ago, but I never really did, cause it starts out kinda slow. As much as I love the Mortal Instruments series, I only read the first couple chapters of Clockwork Angel & then let myself get sidetracked with different books. So it laid in my DNF pile for a while. I finally got back to it, and this time fully let myself sit with the book, and I loved it!! The characters are so sweet and enjoyable, Tessa is just the sweetest girl who’s life gets turned upside down, Will is badass and sweet (though he doesn’t want anyone to know) despite keeping everyone at arms length, and Jem is such a beautiful soul and such a sweetheart. And though you spend the whole book searching for the villain, the Magister, I think the true villain comes out of nowhere and kicks you in the ass! Overall, I definitely recommend this book for any lover of fantasy and specifically the Shadowhunters world that Cassandra Clare has created!

as a main character, tessa is more interesting to follow than clary primarily because of the mystery concerning her existence. i do miss my malec tho but this copy had a delightful bonus story with magnus' pov, which i enjoyed. i'm not incredibly intrigued by the romance or the love triangle as others seem to be; both boys are enjoyable characters, but the romance is not particularly exciting so far. i'm more interested in the plot than the romance. 4 stars for the plot and characters and for being a fun read, but missing that last star for not living up to my expectations in the romance department and for being a bit slow at times.
