Oh wow am I disappointed. Usually, I set my expectations low for WoW novels, but this one really missed even that mark.

I felt as though I was reading an average fanfiction, with one-dimensional characterizations, throwaway dialogue and scenes, interactions that felt like they're either queerbaiting or just rushed maybe-romance because the author ships it. The Alliance parts felt largely unnecessary. Speech patterns and behaviors established in-game weren't carried over consistently.

All in all, a super quick read that made me sigh and roll my eyes more than any other of all the WoW novels I've read.

Maybe I'm just in a slump but I didn't enjoy this book at all and I love the game and most of the other books. Story was just not that great, I don't think it's really a problem with the author but more the subject matter she was given by blizzard. Nothing really happens just some interpersonal stuff with a lot of characters I didn't really care about. Just a little disappointed, had to force myself not to DNF it.

Spoiler alert for the gays

matty and flynn don't even make out. disappointing. cowardly. but I'm glad they didn't kill zappy boy and bwonsamdi felt like such a Bro, so that was something. Otherwise it was the usual passably tolerable nonsense

Everything I’ve wanted

This book was everything I wanted from the World of Warcraft universe. An actual historical book that didn’t feel like reading a textbook!

First, I'd like to say that this does not contain any information that's needed for the next expansion like "Before the Storm" did. If you think you need to read it, you don't.
I was disappointed with this book. I felt it was a little slow and the characters were flat, many of them also seemed to react not matching to their true game character. The only character I thought had been the most fleshed out was Zekhan a.k.a zappy boy. A side character..
There's a lot of negotiations and talking in this book, not a lot of action.
I could pick out each point that the author was instructed by Blizzard to hit and what was actually her added writing to fill in the narrative.
Overall, it's okay, but doesn't hype up the expansion like I thought it might.

Welp, this sure was a wow book. it sure exists! and...has chapters. and told a story. I mean..kinda?

Being on a bit of a WOW kick, i decided to go back and read the shadowlands prequel book i never got around to reading. And really, it was the definition of 'meh'.

A LARGE portion of the book is dedicated the princess of the Zandalori tribe talking about how rebels are in her ranks and how she doesn't feel like a good queen. That's really the majority of this book. And, if you couldn't guess by now, it's pretty boring.

With the exception of the last 40 pages, there's really no action to be had as most of the story is political chatter.

Do you want to hear about how anduin, jaina, and thrall complain about how they hate war for 100 pages? well then do i have the book for you! Because that's what a lot of this story is.

I know the author probably wasn't allowed to make a lot of important lore stuff happen because it's a game tie-in, but MAN they could have done SOMETHING other than you know...NOTHING happen. This book really felt like a holding pattern.

It was nice to see the other races chatted about in this story I will say. Ji (the pandaren) hangs out with Thrall for a bit, and at least some of the other races are mentioned including the Vulpera (albeit briefly).

Still though, it was very dull. When you had to fill your book with an alliance spy master named Shaw chat about his grandma, you know you have a problem with your book (yes i know shaw is like a C+/B- lore character, but i really don't care)

While this book wasn't FUN, it at least had characters i knew and cared about. I would absolutely not recommend this book to a non-wow fan as they will have NO idea what's going on. it's not a "jump right into it" kinda story.

Overall, it's a big fat MEH from me, with a 2.5/5 rounded up to a 3.

Enjoyable, though I didn't find it as engaging as some previous Warcraft books.

Couple of things:

1) I didn’t realize Madeline Roux played WoW (I did find her NPC, though!). I’ve read some of her other books and have enjoyed them, so I was stoked for this book. Roux and WoW, what could be a better combo?

2) Loved the hints of gay love.

Good fun for a video game tie-in, nicely setting up the story of the next WoW expansion. It felt a bit like fanfiction but there's nothing wrong with that at all. Would recommend to fans of the franchise.
