Bittersweet, and ironic🥹
Two things jump off the page of this edition of The Gift of the Magi...first are the illustrations I was immediately struck with understanding why Della's hair was such a sacrifice! Second is the above average vocabulary used to tell the simple story! Phrases like "the silent imputation of parsimony", "but it certainly had that word on the lookout for the mendicancy squad" and words like "vestibule" and "appertaining" signal that there is much more going on in the story that just the everyday poverty imposed circumstances! Lovely book, lovely illustrations, lovely story!

A classic tale, I had just never read the actual story. Love the quote at the end.... that I just transcribed into here and it didn't save, so you'll have to look it up yourself. Basically, you are the wisest gift giver if what you give is a sacrifice of your most precious possession.
