This was an explosive volume as the remaining survivors have to work together to kill one of these god-like creatures.
Yuzuriha gets to really shine this volume. Her moves are slick and brutal and working with Sagiri and her chubby assistant make for a hell of a showdown. But it really goes crazy when Shion comes and the fight explodes into a badass survival mode. The latter half of the volume reverts back to Gabimaru, but when you think it is slowing down they drop a bombshell that changes the context of Gabimaru's past completely.
I'm really digging this volume. The other stuff with the ninja/samurai working together at the end was okay, but the rest was GREAT. I'm for sure going to keep collecting these.
A 4 out of 5.

This volume was one heck of a great read. Emotionally powerful while also being really cool with some real interesting developments on the island coming to light. Senta, Yuzuriha and Sagiri battle against Mu Dan and begin to realize and understand their powers of Tao. After successfully cutting Mu Dan down he transforms into his flower form and the fight gets really out of hand until Shion and Nurugai show up. Shion totally decimates in the battle, Senta intercepts a deadly attack, and Sagiri pins down Mu Dan. Shion deals the finishing blow thanks to Senta's help, yet Senta ends up dying. Gabimaru, Tamiya, Fuchi, and Mei continue their travels towards the gate but Gabimaru has forgotten almost everything and part of his soul/tao seems to be missing. The shogun also sends more members of Yamada Asaemon and a crew of ninja from Iwagakure. Senta's death was really moving as he felt forced to use swords even though what he wanted to do was art. I had really liked him as a character and was sad to see him die. The battle that makes up most of this volume was simply outstanding, fluid and quite gripping. I couldn't put it down. Jigokuraku is really quite the stunning series.

The fifth volume of Hell's Paradise will leave readers with some questions and more nightmares!
Gabimaru's battle with Tensen left his Tao depleted and his memories wiped. As he tries to understand the island, his allies, and the secrets of the elixir of life, he must also fool the others into believing he is unchanged. This volume takes reads through challenging losses and shocking reveals. The illustrations are less gory in this volume but capture the action and emotion well.
