In some ways, this novel was scarier than anything about zombies, angry ghosts or the AI apocalypse, because it is something that could suddenly happen to anyone due to accident or illness: going blind. In this case, there is something (maybe a virus?) that spreads quickly when people are in close contact, that causes them to loose their sight within hours. Maybe it's just me, but this really creeped me out as the novel progressed and the characters tried to come to terms with being instantly blinded. People begin to get rounded up by the army to stop the spread . I had never heard of José Saramago before starting this book, but when I looked him up, I discovered that he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. I definitely want to read more of his novels.

Another example of a book, and its female characters in particular, suffering from the narrow lens of a male author.
It's a decent book, but the asylum part of the story seemed to much of an experiment, that being them in close quarters, them being isolated and observed, and various dilemma to talk about, I also didn't mind the prose with the lack of quotations, lots of commas, and periods are rarely seen, with long paragraphs, Also the asylum story arc is too common that it can be seen in various novels, movies, series, theatre plays, podcasts, short stories, short films, podcasts, radio plays, web novellas, graphic novels, animated, live-action, fiction, non-fiction, in every medium possible, It's not bad perse but it just so common and it's just so depressing with what the blind people had to do in there just to survive, I know that there is a film adaptation but I think it didn't do well and judging from the trailer it seemed bad, the remaining third of the novel with them felt much better for me, less of closed spaces and less experimental, but the choices and dilemmas are still present, I could say that most people writing this kind of story will choose that setting instead of an asylum, but even though it's too familiar being the main setting of most of the post-apocalyptic stories out there, I honestly liked it better, Another thing I quite dislike when reading, but upon writing this review I really didn't mind it that much because it also has a purpose in the story, It's the This is a novel, more or less about humanity, the choices we make, the preservation and perversion of life, It was a little weird to have the third-person omniscient narrator to be giving insights into situation, that sometimes it took me out of reading the novel, but felt kind of being pushed towards an idea or having explained the action of a certain character, rather than having the reader go naturally towards to the same conclusion, All in all this is a decent novel but perhaps not something I'll read again, but if some made a better adaptation of this novel, I'll watch that for sure.
