Where this is short on plot, the writing is just delicious. Woodson is a master at brevity, which is such an underrated thing. Her words are sparse and knock you into breathlessness. Such a beautiful mediation on girlhood, memory and upbringing. Read like poetry and memoir at the same time.

Lyrical and gorgeously written short novel about the memories of 4 girls growing up in Brooklyn in the 1970s. It felt like reading poetry at many times.
"I lifted my head to look up into the changing leaves, thinking how at some point, we were all headed home. At some point, all of this, everything and everyone, became memory.”

2024 March Reading Challenge
Prompt: read a book that starts with H-A-P-P-Y
Possible Spoilers Ahead!
This is a novel about grief and denial. Of having to confront reality and never fully prepared to do so. How something can be beautiful and forever only to be painfully and forcefully snatched away in an instant. This novel is heartbreakingly painful without being preachy or judgmental, at times a warm hug or a reminder of life's many hardships. Woodson is a masterful writer and has more than deserved standing shoulder to shoulder with the best. This book was a painful read, but an incredible one as well.
