 Going into "Pet Sematary" territory, this novella definitely leaves me curious as to what's to come in the main books. Whether Kara will be a major character or not, and what the titular "dogs" will progress into.... interesting.

This was very interesting, if this is a look ahead at something that will turn up further along in the main novels. It’s possible that it won’t, but it seems a new interesting subject to build conflicts and alliances about. The point of view of a ten year old felt mostly genuine, but not completely. That must be very hard to write, though.
ETA: It was indeed a look ahead, yay!
