A classic from my childhood. It is heartwarming and touching, with some funny moments. Timeless!

this was very charming, sweet, comforting and warm, and also very humourous. also occasionally action packed and full of mischief of a Russian general and his antics and the lives of 2 abandoned boys and the soldier and inn keeper women who take them in. I reread this for the first time since childhood, and what I didn't remember or expect was the terrible violence against children that occurs sometimes???? which is of course not fun to read about so trigger warning. a few plot points were actually very dark. but it was also touching and heart warming in the love and generosity of the characters. the Russian general definitely becomes the main character as the book goes on, the focus on the little boys dwindled as the book went on which was a little sad. it felt like a compilation? in the way that it was like little stories linked together, but not necessarily in a wider narrative that all the events are leading toward, it's just what this group of people are up to with the general creating mischief and chaos around them. it was a very quick and easy read, and a book from my childhood that I really loved when I read it at age 11, and re reading it definitely was a great idea, very nostalgic and quite nice
