“What with Japanese industriousness and high-tech culture and the market principles that the Denny’s chain is always pursuing, it shouldn’t be that hard to get crispy toast, don’t you think? So, why can’t they do it? Of what value is a civilization that can’t toast a piece of bread as ordered?”

Murakami’s moody story set in Tokyo “after dark” splits the perspective between two very different sisters: on sister who wanders the shops and streets of Tokyo with a strange and charismatic boy, and one sister trapped in the world of sleep. Spooky girls, late-night adventures with strangers, brothels, weird TV people. What more could you ask for?

After Dark is a journey through the night with strangely connected events that could be dream or mundane reality. Everything is completely expected and at the same time completely absurd and that is why I love Murakami
(4.5) This book has unintendedly become something that was much needed for me. Even though it has only been two and a half years since I've gotten into the habit of reading, I have realized that my brain had become somewhat congested from all the stories, characters and their passions crammed up in it. And I had lost sense of taste, my ability to distinguish between things I liked and things I didn't, in a book.
Apart from this, you can clearly see how simple the language in it is and yet Murakami has managed to give it a "flawless dept". Although I have taken away a 0.5, because in my opinion this book did have a little friction in it's flow (as compared to the other novels of Murakami that I have read), it still was a great read. A testament of Murakami's excellence as a writer.

I enjoyed a lot of the dialogue between the characters, I just didn't really get the Eri plot line. Think it's one of those books which reading about it afterwards might help to understand it, so maybe my view will change more positively on it.
