Sigh, I didn't DNF like I had done with ([b:Wildest Dreams|12390650|Wildest Dreams (Fantasyland, #1)|Kristen Ashley|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327913321s/12390650.jpg|17371693]) I just don't rate this very highly.I think what it comes down to is the writing. Ashleys writing to me is poor. Her constant use of "Ums" " awesome" "dude" and her way of repeating phrases like below.

I thought this was awesome.
"This is so awesome," I said. Tor smiled at me.

I mean we just learnt you thought this was awesome... You don't have to verbally say it. use a thesaurus, Ashley or write a little better.

The story and world building were average and I think that me.

I semi- liked the romance but he was so alpha it sometimes hurt, as in he was exceptionally rude overspeaking her needs and wishes to get his point across or disregarding her point completely. That was frustrating.
I think that's it for me and Ashley, I've tried a book or two and I'm not clicking with her.

2.5 Stars

I read the first book in this series and enjoyed it (despite not enjoying the utter lack of female body autonomy and all the other archaic conservatisms that were unsettlingly normalized and the FMC just took on the chin).

I skipped the second book thanks to the heads up on the "rape to romance" theme. *hard pass*

Then comes this third book and I was reminded of a post I saw on social media:

What my girlfriend thought, first 4 dates:
1. Nice shirt.
2. Wow. A second nice shirt.
3. Okay, first shirt again.
4. He has two shirts.

See, I enjoyed how the main characters in the first book were written and their unique personalities. Turns out, those exact same personalities were recycled in this book, despite the characters being from completely different states/kingdoms/locations. The gals themselves were from entirely different walks of life, yet had the exact same vernacular, reactions, disposition...

The VERBATIM terms of endearment from the first book were really off-putting, particularly because they are so oddly specific. Couple that with a relationship where the man is chronically talking over or outright disregarding his female love interest's wants, needs, and thoughts... and after a while it just felt like a boring, demeaning waste of time and money.

I stopped reading at the epilogue because at that point I simply didn't care.

This is my fave in this series and the only one where I felt the balance of power between h&H was equal. Sure they each had their 'idiot' moments, but in the end imho they appreciated and loved each other despite their failings.
I also appreciated that the side characters apologized in a thoughtful manner too. That is one thing I like about KA books, that the evil OWs and snippy side characters are given their comeuppance. Also that the H stands by his woman when needed. Sure the H here is a complete knob at first, but he readily admits his mistake and owns it.
I guess that's why I kept coming back to this author, cause it certainly wasn't for her sense of fashion or her repetitious and over descriptive prose.

BUT THE OTHERS WERE SO GOOD WHAT HAPPENED.

If found this book unrealistic - even for a fantasy - and so cheesy that I thought I was going to die from lack of insulin to maintain an appropriate blood sugar level. No joke, I felt like I was going to get diabetes from the chick that talks to birds, skips across courtyards, and is MISS POSITIVITY WHEN FACED WITH FLYING FREAKING DINOSAURS. No matter though, even though literally everyone hates her, she still has time to nuzzle horses or whatever.

“Salem!” I cried with delight, snatched Aggie off my shoulder so he wouldn’t go flying (figuratively) and skipped excitedly across the space while holding Aggie carefully in my hand.

Salem watched me and when I got close, I threw my arms around his glossy neck, deftly letting Aggie out of my hand so he could hop up on Salem’s back.

Salem whinnied and when I stepped back and grinned at him, he stuffed his nose in my neck and blew.

I laughed out loud because it tickled.

“Look at you, you beautiful beast. I’ve missed you. I haven’t seen you for a whole week!” I cried.

Salem snorted."

Salem is a horse.

Aggie is a bird.

Lady can communicate with bird and horse.

Aaaand... rainbows and sunshine, idgaf.

The worst thing about the utter failure of this book, is that I was looking forward to it so much. The first and second books (particularly the second) were amazing. Kristen Ashley really does have quite a natural talent for creating a whole other world, something that I would like to see more of perhaps... ;)

One of the aspects that I liked the most about this series was probably the immersion of the kingdoms throughout the series. All of these cultures, countries, people, live in the same world, yet they are all completely different. The synchronisation of them is chillingly special, something that I am looking forward to reading (or attempt to read) in the the fourth book.

There are many criticisms I could make about this book. But I'll leave it at this. Because the reality is this:

description
adventurous fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

i really don’t like the writing style and I did also find a spelling mistake. I’m really trying to read better quality books but I think I should just start w fiction cos it’s so much easier to digest.

she gets back w him way too quickly
