A pair of siblings pretend to be "children of the forest" by setting up camp and exploring in their backyard. Very cute story that appreciates and highlights the imagination of kids and their innate love for nature.
This book might require at least two readings, one to follow the outdoor adventure and learn that it is not as scary as it first appears (hints in the illustrations help along the way) and a second (and more) to enjoy a wonderful day of imaginative play and perhaps learning basic survival skills by a pair of siblings. The periodic accidental topiary monsters remind us all that a vivid imagination can have its drawbacks. Lovely illustrations. A Waldorf feel.
**This book is being considered as a nominee for next year’s Beehive Book Award for Children in Utah. My review reflects my thoughts as it pertains to that consideration.**
I liked this one a lot! I didn't expect to, but I'm not sure why. Maybe the cover didn't quite grab me, which is silly because it's the same art style that I enjoyed throughout the book.
Even so, this one is going in my Storytime rotation - but I want it to be a Beehive nominee too!

A sweet little story with lush, beautiful illustrations. A young boy and his little sister have become wild, and now they are children of the forest. Armed with a bow and a quiver of (foam-tipped) arrows, Brother leads Sister on a series of adventures: encounters with a puma (aka kitty-cat) hunting for its next meal, a fearsome wild beast (a very patient St. Bernard), and finding a campsite and setting up camp. Suddenly the alarm is set off, and a scavenger woman (Mom) appears with a gift of water bottles. Brother doesn't fall for her ruse; he knows she hopes to steal their food while they're asleep, but Sister has been fooled and quickly follows the woman as she gets away. Now Brother is alone; he is wild, he is a child of the forest...but Sister needs him, he must protect her, and for her sake he leaves behind his wild life to live indoors and watch over her.
The story is really cute, and the illustrations have lots of detail to add to the story. This would be great for storytime or bedtime!

Adorable. Love the details in the illustrations: nuthatches, lizards, bugs, and the decorations in the bedroom. The juxtaposition of the older brother's imagination as he imagines a forest adventure against the complete lack of interest by the little sister who is absolutely just having fun playing in their backyard while ignoring his storytelling is fantastic. So cute
This picture book focuses on a brother's imaginative play with his sister, as he pictures bushes as dragons and gathers supplies from nature. The concept appealed to me more than the execution, since the book ends on a rather unresolved and indifferent note.
