Olive is working towards her PhD, and, like any grad student, hasn’t really got time for life. But she would do anything for her two best friends.
So when her friend, Anh, refuses to date Jeremy, whom she is obviously really into, because Olive dated him briefly, Olive decides that she must prove that she genuinely doesn’t care. Has moved on. And truly wants them to be together.
What better way to do all of that? Well, lie of course! Lie about dating someone new, and then kiss the first guy you see when you’re caught. Except that guy just so happens to be the university’s most renowned asshole professor, Adam Carlsen.
But the most baffling part of it all is that he agrees to help her keep up the charade.
I can absolutely see why this book has had so much hype!
Two painfully intelligent people who aren’t quite as good at peopling as they are at academia, pretending to be in a relationship to help each other out. And ultimately falling in love because, hello!
I adored how Adam fell first, fell hard, and fell sooooo long ago, and Olive was so oblivious to it all.
Clearly Adam’s “reason” for the fake relationship was total bullshit. He could not have cared less about that grant. It was just a great excuse to spend time with her. Get to know her. Maybe even hold her.
They were the perfect pairing and their banter and dry humour was really endearing. Seeing Adam come out of his grumpy shell and soften completely for Olive was beautiful. And when he thought she was in love with someone else? Gaahhhh I just wanted to hug him, the loveable giant!
Anh and Malcom were wonderful friends to Olive, and their dynamic was delightful. But for me, Holden stole the secondary-character-show. He was all the drama, encased in a very serious scientist package.
This book was so reminiscent of Penny Reid’s writing (who is one of my favourite authors) - from the women in STEM, to the socially awkward characters, to the delicious build up of feelings and sexual tension - that it was impossible not to love it. The only thing that could’ve made it better? More spice. And maybe seeing Tom get even more of a comeuppance. But I loved their story the way it was and already miss them!

Yet another 5 star review of The Love Hypothesis from yours truly. What a fun read! I love college settings for books (4 of my reads from this month took place at universities!), and a quirky, funny, and ambitious woman pursuing a PhD in biology made for an incredible protagonist.
