This story was just...okay. Zoe's art is gorgeous and was my draw into this comic. However, not much happens except piles of trauma so I was left wondering what the point was. Beautifully rendered lesbian misery porn is still misery porn.

I loved this. Part of me wishes that it were longer, but there's nothing wrong with it being short and (not so) sweet.

Enjoy Parable of the Sower and other hopeless stories where you know only bad things will happen over and over and over? This might be the comic for you! It's a pretty good read, though depressing and disturbing. The art is beautiful. Bonus points for a Colorado setting. I thought it would focus more on Honeysuckle and Yolanda. Content warnings for gore, death, grief, and animal death.

Rain is a graphic novel of love, terror raining from the skies, death, and the wicked ways of the world.

Story by Joe Hill, Adaptation by David M. Booher, Art by Zoe Thorogood, Colors by Chris O’Halloran, Letters & Collection Design by Shawn Lee

Here Comes The Rain Again – An introduction from Joe Hill, did an amazing job getting readers pumped even more for the story to come. The way that Joe calls out the state of the world, but focuses mainly on the team behind getting this graphic novel on shelves was so wonderful. I went into this one dark, only snagging it because I saw Joe’s name. This intro made me so excited to get to the story!

When the story begins, we meet Honeysuckle, a young woman that can’t wait for her girlfriend, Yolanda, to arrive as she’s moving in. Many of the neighbors are also counting down her arrival! However, with this excitement, there is already a sense of dread and doom that’s hanging heavy over the opening scenes.

Before long, the first rain falls, changing everything.

This story got so brutal so quickly! Each step of the way, I kept hoping for everything to work out. Like life, some things do, some don’t. Overall, this amazing tale shows all sides of humanity, and while even in the darkest of times, what good just a few shreds of hope can do.

Each of the characters were lovely, but the little boy, Templeton, was extra special. I loved his innocence and smart outlook on the world as a whole. He was definitely a ray of sunshine in the storm.

And my goodness does the artwork from Tess Fowler in the back of the book summarize the emotion in this graphic novel perfectly.

My Favorite Passage from Rain

Facing grief is like standing on a beach and looking out over the water. Some waves are small and lap at your feet, some waves are huge and engulf you completely.

My Final Thoughts on Rain

Rain was an intense graphic novel that will leave readers punctured, but with bandaids of hope healing the wounds quickly enough. A must-read for fans of horror graphic novels that will leave antsy to see what happens next while also dreading to find if anything gets worse.

Disclaimer: I have voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a free copy from the publisher via Edelweiss+, thank you!

This was just okay, a little too short for me to form any meaningful connection to the characters. I do like survival stories that involve unusual and deadly weather changes so the premise hooked me and the art was also really good. It fit the subject matter and the characters were well-designed so I didn't have a hard time telling them apart. The ending felt a bit rushed and the twist villain fell flat but I didn't mind it too much. It was more an exploration of grief than a downright horror story and I enjoyed that.

Overall it's an okay read when you feel like reaching for some apocalyptic survival story with a lesbian main character.

This was good. It's hard to say I enjoyed it, because the content is pretty dark, but I appreciated it for being good. On an otherwise ordinary day, Boulder, CO is hit with an unusual storm that causes splinters of some kind of crystal to rain down, killing thousands, and the rain is spreading. What caused this, and how can it be stopped?
The pacing is pretty steady in this, and goes along at about medium speed, but it still has a slow burn quality to it, it's got nice tension. While we don't exactly get to know the characters that well (the rain hits very early, and after that there's a lot of grief going on; I suppose we got to know the characters through how they dealt with what happened), I did care about them. I want Honeysuckle to make it, I want her to be okay; the story ends with a fragment of hope for the future, but it's not really what you'd call a happy ending. It's an appropriate ending, though, given the weight of the story. It did surprise me a bit, I hadn't worked out the clues, though one thing did bother me enough to stand out. Other readers will catch on quicker than I did, I'm sure, I don't always catch stuff, but if you don't catch it, don't feel bad! The art was awesome, and the gallery at the end had some really nice cover art.
I can't think of anything I didn't like about this, and it's one I'd read again, so 5 stars!
