this book managed to take me by surprise, which is super refreshing considering i usually guess the ending most times. that’s prob only because this whole thing was so convoluted & larger than life that i had trouble keeping up.

honestly a good read, but it felt almost like engberg fleshed out every single character way too much to really have a main character focus.

i also didn’t care at all abt kørner’s sex life, despite engberg thinking it mattered far more than it did.

all in all, a good read. tough to get through, but reads like a movie. would def recommend, & will def be looking for more of her work moving forward. adequate debut for sure.

Summary: A young woman is found violently murdered in her Copenhagen apartment. A young man who also lives in the same building and is a friend of the young woman is murdered in a dramatic fashion. The landlady, Esther, is devastated by these deaths. Is it a coincidence that the murder bears a striking resemblance to the plot of the book Esther is writing and has shared within her literary circle? Or is something more sinister happening? The investigative duo of Jeppe and Worner feverishly try to get to the bottom of the strange murders.

Thoughts: I struggled through most of this novel. I find it difficult to DNF so I kept going and the last third of the book was better. However I didn’t enjoy the Jeppe/Worner team - they sniped at each other constantly which was annoying. The plot was convoluted and the motives for the murders just didn’t make sense to me or feel believable. It was not an enjoyable read for me.

The Tenant was an enjoyable read for me. It is a Scandinavian mystery about the tenants of an apartment building who become involved in a disturbing murder case. The murder that was acted out followed the outline of an unpublished book written by the owner of the building. I enjoyed the twists and turns, and felt like the ending was satisfying. I liked the pacing of the book, and enjoyed the tidbits of clues that were dropped every so often. It is the first in a series that I look forward to reading!

I have tried three times to read this novel; thinking I just want in the correct headspace for it. But each time was challenging for me. The storyline sounds really interesting but the frame isn’t right for me- I think I just don’t like police procedures.
