What an “electrifying” book. My daughter and I read this together and both rated it a 4.5. Annabelle is learning to move on past the tragic events which occurred in book 1, Wolf Hollow. She also meets up with Andy Woodbury again. Annabelle is set to experience events of a lifetime and learn tragedy affects more people than she realizes. As she meets new people and learns new life skills, this story is set to give you chills and tears as well as laughter and joy.

An incredibly moving sequel to a beloved book. Wolk revisits Wolf Hollow and explores how a person (and several dogs) can be more than one thing. Truly fantastic.

[10 stars ⭐️.] I really don’t know what I was expecting when I started this book, I feel like I had an idea, but didn’t really know. I had already knew (most) of the characters from the previous book and had enjoyed them, probably because they felt as if they were real. There were definitely periods of time where this book was hard to put down. Annabelle..she’s one of my favorite middle grade characters. Being in her mind felt fresh, it felt as if I was actually in the story, along on the journey with her. Although there were some slow periods of the book, the fast pace made up for it. I’m actually sad to be finishing this duo(?). It was an amazing book, definitely one to remember 🩵.

I loved Wolf Hollow and I think Lauren Wolk is a very talented writer. She is able to get at the human condition through the eyes of a middle grade child in rural Pennsylvania during WWII. This historical part of this novel is lite--it's really just the farming way of life that sets it back in time. Annabelle learns a lot about herself and others after she is struck by lightning. The menacing Andy from Wolf Hollow is back and there are new mysterious neighbors who take care of dogs. A charming novel.

This says a lot ... I liked this book more than book one in the series.

Favorite Quotes:

Pg 183
So people were a bit immune to the background music of our days: cows mooing, crows bickering, and the endless bugs, tuning their instruments, fiddling for their mates.

pg 227
All through the troubles with Toby, all through the long winter that followed, all through my saddest spring, all through the days since the lightning strike, I'd been trying to find my way.
And I was still trying.
"Then a little at a time," I said. "Which, you're right, is the way it happens. Is the way it happens for me, too."

pg294
“Now I'm looking harder. I thought the lightning had made me smarter, and I suppose in some ways it did, just like books do, just like teachers do. All kinds of teachers. And they're all important. But I need to be my own lightning. My own book. My own teacher. I should have been looking harder all along. And I'm sorry that I didn't know what I didn't know."
Center moment on that, his eyes on my face. “About what?"
I gazed steadily back at him, though his bruises made me want to look away. "Everything."

pg 302
I Shrugged. "Yes. Every little thing makes a difference some way or another. But I did my best at the time. It doesn’t make much sense to fret about it now. Especially when I can’t go back and do it over. Or undo it. Besides, there’s plenty right here that needs doing.”

I just finished this book and loved everything about it. I especially liked the characters and how they changed and grew. I never read Wolf Hollow and I feel this book stands on its own.
