Short Review: I grew very bored with this one. So now we are introducing Witches into the Sookie world. Vampires, Werewolves, and Witches, oh my. Jason goes missing, yawn, Sookie does turn to find him but really, she kinda said 'eff it. Hotspot (which come on, think of a better town name) is also introduced here too, and it's a scary place indeed. Not much goes on.
Spoiler
Let's talk about the 5pg sex scene's between Eric and Sookie. For starters, did a 13yr old write them?! They were laughable. Harris didn't want to just use words like boobs, so she called them puppies... i skimmed after that til they were done. And really can we call this rape since Eric wasn't really Eric and won't remember any of this... hm.Misc.

I loved this installment of Sookie!! Okay, it wasn't amazing, but dang it, it was a strong 4.5 stars! This one hooks you right away, picking up on New Years Eve in Bon Temps.. **spoiler alerts ** and Eric running down the side of the road half naked, not a clue who he is. The summary said it is a "kinder, gentler Eric..." that is an understatement. This Eric is kind, gentle, romantic, sincere, a gentleman (as gentlemanly as you can get being a vamp), sweet, caring, sensitive, slightly timid and completely clueless about his background. He thinks the sun rises and sets with Sookie (almost literally) and he is bound to pay homage to her ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE (oh my, watch out for that shower scene! "Yikes. Yahoo. Yum."). Sookie can't help but for once to feel really loved, cared for and respected. She loves Eric's companionship, he is devoted to her, promises to never leave, that he loves her. Page, by page - I find myself wanting Eric 2.0 to stay.... but alas, they must find out "who dunnit" and get Eric his memory back. This book also marks (finally) the end to that biatch Debbie when Alcide finally "abjures" that hoe out of his life. This of course leads to one last finale where Debbie catches Sookie and Eric off guard leaving them no choice but to take matters into their own hands.... Lots of twists and turns, new characters and predicaments along the way. I heart crazy vamp-shape shifting-were books.... You had me at glowing vamps Charlaine Harris.
This is my first Sookie novel, although I am familiar with the HBO series. As a standalone work this works pretty well as a mystery, but the fact that the book limits you to a single character's viewpoint made it a little confusing at times .
Spoiler
and you never get a good sense of the villains and their motivations.Spoiler
A particularly grating fact is that the all of the villains are said to have died off-screen. There aren't enough asterisks in the world for all of the ***fist-shaking***!
Bill and Sookie are still broken up. But, not, apparently, because he nearly drained her without her consent and raped her on top of that. No, just because he ran off with his ex and ditched her.
So Bill's off to Peru in this book, and Sookie gets to spend most of her time with an amnesiac Eric. Who isn't as cool as the real Eric, but is miles better than Bill.
Sookie's brother goes missing. So pretty much the plot of the book is to get Eric's memory back (witches took it) and to find Jason (who knows who took him).
The witch thing was driving me crazy. I couldn't figure out what Harris was getting at. Not all Wiccans are witches? Or not all witches are Wiccans? And then she throws around the word 'pagan' as well, just to further confuse me. On top of that, there are apparently bad witches and (if not good witches, neutral witches).
Oh, oh, and for good measure, she throws in a fairy. Randomly.
And there's a lot of sex and a lot of gore in this one. Which is either good or bad, depending on your opinion of one or the other.
Wait a minute, why did I just give this a 3 instead of a 2? Oh yea, probably for the nearly completely lack of Bill. Hate him.

I have been on the fence with this book series but decided to continue with them and I'm glad I did as this has been the best so far. Hoping the remaining books are as good if not better!
