On to the fourth book already!
Dead to the World was an easy read. This book featured Eric more prominently after he gains amnesia caused by a curse that a witches coven has placed on him.
There are just so many supernatural beings in Sookies world! Vampires, Maenads, Werewolves, Were-creatures (Including but not limited to were-owl’s, were-lynx’s, and were-panthers) and now we’re introduced to witches and fairy’s. A fairy named Claudine make’s an appearance claiming that she is drawn to Bon Temps because there has been a lot of unusual supernatural activity lately. I like to wonder what’s not possible in the world of Sookie Stackhouse.
Sookie has made it clear to Bill that their relationship is pretty much over because she can’t handle the way that he continuously hurts her. Bill doesn’t like this but respects her wishes. For most of the book he is absent because he has been ordered to go to Peru to continue researching for his vampire database this does cause Sookie to feel lonely since it is really her first time being completely alone, even her first time having an ex-boyfriend.
Eric isn’t cocky in this book which I admit is refreshing, this is because when he loses his memory he also loses everything that he is meaning his personality. How could someone be the same after having lost all of their memories that shaped them to be who they are? I loved that Charlaine Harris captured this. This appeals to Sookie because he is much nicer and she can actually stand being around him as a person.
I liked Eric in this book but at the same time I didn’t like him as much as I liked the arrogant, strong minded, I-don’t-give-a-flying-#@*& Eric. I think this has to do more with the ‘bad boy’ factor… Oddly enough I’m still on the Alcide band wagon at the moment even though he’s not on the cards right now. Ironically Alcide is not a bad boy and I prefer him that way. There’s just so many attractive qualities about Alcide. Sookie has so many men that she’s attracted to, I’m only on the fourth book so I’m trying to figure out how many she will have by the tenth book haha.
Jason was in this storyline more than he has been in any of the other books so far so that was nice to get to see Sookie actually communicate with her brother.
I found I really enjoyed this book, I liked it a lot more than the last one; it just held my interest more than the last book. And Eric is sexy. So very sexy. When it comes to Eric I do have to admit I picture Alexander Skarsgård, who plays Eric in True Blood.
Overall I can’t wait to read the next Sookie Stackhouse book! Everytime I finish one of these books I’m just dying to pick up the next one. Thinking about getting all the way to the last book in the series makes me feel extremely sad. I wish it wouldn’t happen! Luckily for me I’ve still got more than a few books to get through till that happens.

Objectively, the Sookie Stackhouse series isn't known for being well-written but instead for the fabulous television show True Blood and the extremely bizarre town of Bon Temps where everything takes place. I don't read this series for the academic writing, let me be abundantly clear. I read for the insane characters and to see what does or does not occur in the transliteration to the HBO show.
As the books progress, I really admire Sookie's strength of character and inner monologue despite her poor luck with men both human and paranormal. The book starts off with Sookie working at the Merlotte's on New Year's Eve where her resolution is to stay out of trouble and to not get injured from paranormal drama. Sookie is fun to read but she seems to have a bad luck magnet permanently hanging from her tan neck.

One of the great parts of the book was the inclusion of more supernatural creatures. Instead of vampires and werewolves being the sole bumps in the night, Bon Temps was visited by werepanthers, witches, and fairies. It's been lightly inferred that Sookie is part fairy in the show but I'm interested to see their further involvement in the upcoming books.

The main plot in Dead to the World is viking vampire babe Eric is hexed by a coven of witches because he refused to sleep with their leader and he loses his memory. Amnesia!Eric loses all aspects of his personality and becomes demure and vulnerable instead of domineering and ruthless. Sookie is taken aback by his identity crisis and starts to fall for him. She knows this is only temporary but she is unsure what will happen when his memory is retrieved. Amnesia!Eric was very sweet, but I prefer him saucy and in control.

Pam Beaufort gets better every book and is the best vampire sidekick anyone could ask for in a fictitious vampire bar. Her quips are hilarious, her fashion is impeccable, and she is slowly warming up to Sookie.

It was great to see the vampires and werewolves come together to fight the coven of witches. It seemed like a much more adult and bloodcurdling Breaking Dawn before Twilight was even published. It was a crazy battle where it was hard to decipher what was happening. One of my favorite supernatural super hunks, Alcide Herveaux, lended his assistance in the fight. I feel like he would be an excellent match for Sookie if he didn't have the emotional baggage of being hung up on the paranormal trash can Debbie Pelt.
I appreciate the way you can formally remove a vampire from your home by saying "I rescind my invitation." It's such a proper archaic phrase but it can literally launch an unwanted vampire from your home. The werewolves have a similar important saying, "I abjure you." The full phrase includes 'I see you no longer. I hunt with you no longer. I share flesh with you no longer.' It was so satisfying and chilling to read when Alcide reciting this to Debbie when he found out she aided in Bill's torture and tried to kill Sookie.

The book ended with a peculiar note where Eric got his memory back and Sookie hasn't addressed what happened during Jason spending some time in the hillbilly werepanther infested town Hotshot against his will. I hope the next book, Dead as a Doornail(?) will hold some answers for a confused reader. This series isn't for everyone. I tolerate because I don't take it too seriously and I'm obsessed with the television show. It's an easy to read series between whittling down my massive TBR shelf. Stay tuned for the next time when I get to pick up the next volume and you'll know who I'm pretending to be...

Love this series, but this particular installment was just "okay" to me. Probably because I missed the smoldering heat & tension between Sookie & Alcide from the previous book. I felt like the ending was a bit drawn out.
Still, it was good to see her moving forward, with the exploration of some new characters and revisiting of previous ones.

Learn from me. I shouldn't start an urban fantasy series in the middle of it.
