Spoiler… grrrrrrrrrr… the whole “I’m a female, 40-something psychologist with teenage kids who can’t myself from falling for a 20-something patient.” Blah. Had me wondering if I should finish. But the ending was redeeming.

I listened to this via the free Audible book I got a few months ago (and only just got around to reading). Aimee Horne does a GREAT job with the narration - usually, I find put-on accents in audiobooks a bit off-putting but she pulls it off really well, and I liked the production details with the sound of the phone calls and police scanners.

As for the actual book itself, it was…fine? Good? I think? Objectively, it was well written, the story was good, I thought the character motivations all stood up very soundly and there were no glaringly obvious plot holes (though I did spend a LOT of time trying to figure out how old Margot and Cormac were). I liked how Pomare used the unreliable narrator, and the twist at the end was actually pretty good - I didn’t see it coming, which stands for something.

All that being said, I just didn’t really care. I wasn’t super invested in the book, and it didn’t have me on the edge of my seat, save a few moments when everything started coming out. The main motivation I had for finishing was so that I would know how it had been pulled off; I did find myself searching for a plot summary to find out what happened and if I had found one, I’m not sure I would have finished it.

Don’t get me wrong - it’s not a bad story by any means! The only thing that really bothered me at times was Margot. Like, hello????? So much of this would have been preventable if you had been honest with your husband earlier on and gotten everyone on your side before it all went to shit! They all believed you! That situation would literally ONLY benefit you!!!

BUT I digress. Like I said, not a bad story at all. Just…not really my thing. Solid three stars.

3 1/2 stars- I gave the extra half star for the narration. She did it well, with all the voices and accents she used. It was entertaining to listen to. The premise itself was a little lacking in some respects. The ending was shocking in its own right but a bit unbelievable. Overall it was decent. I just didn’t connect or care enough about the characters to rate it any higher than I did.

Good, though not great. I found myself waiting more than once for the characters to catch on, or catch up, to the obvious.

Gripping!

The last few pages ruined it for me a bit though. I think it would have been better without.
