This is a middle book for sure. A lot of slow points & a few moments where I thought things were finally picking up...just to have them slow down again. But the ending was good & made me want to read the next book so it still counts as a win!!
Wow, what a disappointment. I really enjoyed the first book. It was very character driven and while the plot wasn't mind blowing-ly awesome, I really enjoyed the characters and how individual they were and how their interactions with each other created intrigue.
This book, unfortunately didn't focus on the characters and more on plot and in my opinion it suffered from it. I think the plot would have been completely acceptable, but the fact that the characters lost all the things that made them interesting in the first book made this not nearly as fun to read.
To say something positive, I still really enjoy Olivie Blake's prose. Lots of parentheses to insert humor or thoughts and some unique ways of storytelling that works really well for me. It will turn others off, but I happen to enjoy it quite a bit. Other than that I really struggled with this one.
I almost DNF'd this book multiple times, but stuck through to the end. I'm glad I did, because it looks like there is going to be a third book. And now I can decide on whether or not to read it when it comes out to give Blake another shot in this world. But sadly this book just fell flat for me.

I will admit that the first substantial 'part' of this book was so abysmal I almost dropped the whole series. It was so obsessed with sounding intelligent and causing friction between the characters that it forgot to be interesting or fun to read. Thankfully, I kept with the novel and it got better from that point forward. There were new and interesting character dynamics that didn't get explored in the first book, which is really where this author shines. This book also had more of a plot/driving force than the first one which definitely helped make it better.
And, in my humble opinion, if these characters all just had an orgy, it'd probably fix most of their problems. Which is part of what makes the character dynamics fun so I'm not complaining.

I started this second book with many questions from the first one, but I think I might have even more now that I finished the book 🧐
The story is great, a power and time travel paradox is always fun to read + again the depth of characters is great 😊
I do wonder though whether I or really ‘hate’ this book because at some points it was so frustrating…or really love it because it did challenge me 🤨
