While I love N. K. Jemisin and her prose and imagination, this book is not working for me. I don't like NYC like that, and I'd rather opt for her other works not set in real places.

Really great story and very entertaining, sometimes the stereotypes get to me a little too much and honestly the ending here is satisfying enough I have no interest in the sequel
An innovative concept that literally brings to life the struggle of contemporary mega-cities, and a love letter to the soul, the people and the (many) contradictions of NYC. Resolutely modern, the author uses this mythology of the urban landscapes to discuss gender politics, civil rights, social media, racism and many other contemporary issues, sometimes without the subtlety that would make these messages more impactful. The novel often trips into the pitfalls of the genre - such as over-explaining situations and taking narrative shortcuts - but overall an entertaining read that kicks off a promising series.
It was a little up and down for me, and all over the place But a very original story.
