Really can't get into it...

Just give me some lemon meringue pie, please

Looking at the ratings and top comments, I do wonder if this is a book only/mostly hardcore Alexis Hall fans read, because although I really quite liked this, I would have thought that this would be more controversial book. I mean, I recently read The Woods All Black and while I really loved that book a lot of people couldn't stand the age-gap relationship in it. Well, the gap here is even larger so if that is a dealbreaker for you, don't pick this up.

Anyway, I read this book in a day, because I just couldn't stop myself. And I need to ask you something! Do all the new edited version have the author's annotations like this one does?! I did the previous two books on audio so I missed this aspect, but OMG that was so much fun reading this, I felt like I had a chat with a friend about the book while reading it. Alexis Hall is such a nerd... no wonder I love his books so much 😂

Anyway, For Real does have a pretty clear agenda (for me, in a good way). It explores an age gap relationship, showing that even though there are things and pitfalls to be aware of, such relationship is not inherently toxic. And he also explores a BDSM dynamic where the sub is the experienced one and older one and really gives the whole thing so much nuance and plasticity that you wouldn't find in most of the mainstream BDSM romances.

Intellectually, this was incredibly stimulating and I loved it as a discussion piece a lot. I enjoyed it as a romance too, of course, but it wasn't something that I found relatable (but the more it wasn't relatable, the more I found it interesting, I guess). This book convinced me that BDSM definitely isn't something that I'm personally interested in, because I found myself pulling back from what was happening at times, but that doesn't change the fact that this is incredibly written and that I found the characters loveable.

Definitely would recommend, if you like social discussions with your romances and if you enjoy BDSM content. I'm a bit surprised that once again, I'm almost done with an Alexis Hall series, only Pansies left to go and I heard such a good things about that one, so looking forward to it!

This book had so many things I love all wrapped up in one lovely package. A delicious amount of kink, a sweet, starry-eyed young dom, and a jaded, reluctant older sub. I absolutely loved Toby and Laurie's dynamic together. I loved how utterly charmed Laurie was by how honest and authentic Toby was. Their relationship went for a rollercoaster ride, but I'm always expecting big emotions and dramatic breakups when I read an Alexis Hall book. I loved this book the whole way through, even when Laurie was being an ass and then later Toby was being an ass 😂 They eventually figured out how to love and support each other, and the journey they both had to go on to get there was truly excellently written.

I wish there were more adjective options I could've chosen from to describe this story, like "intense" or "thought-provoking." So much more meaningful than any other random bdsm novel.

Favorite Alexis Hall book. Hands down.

Yes, even when you remind me of my babes from Glitterland.
