AT the beginning of my journey through the alchemist i thought that it was very much related to the Indian way of mystical teachings and it seemed to me that i was reading a book written by an Indian saint but after reading it one more time i realized that the way of thinking of people around the world is very much related and the solution to their problems is simple, every legends are trying to teach us to look "within" in different ways ..Coelho did it with a simple book he extracted the teachings of several masters in to a great book and that too in a simple and understandable style ..what makes Paulo Coehlo different is that he presents his ideas to the initiates in their own language because of that the enlightenment seeking people finds valuable treasures in his words
"Il n'y a qu'une chose qui puisse rendre un rêve impossible: c'est la peur d'échouer."
le pouvoir de l'amour, les éléments, et Dieu est incroyable.
le pouvoir de l'amour, les éléments, et Dieu est incroyable.
It was definitely a thought provoking book and prompted several interesting discussions with my husband. But I really felt the author tried to beat you over the head with his moral. There was little subtlety for the reader to discover on her own; everything was spelled out and didn't require much analysis!
Two passages I marked:
"Because I don't live in either my past or my future. I'm interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you'll be a happy man. You'll see there is life in the desert, that there are stars in the heavens, and that tribesmen fight because they are part of the human race. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we're living right now" (88).
"And God only rarely reveals the future. When he does so, it is for only one reason: it's a future that was written so as to be altered" (107).
I was a literature major in college. I would have loved to write a term paper discussing this book.
