3.5 stars. Too much talk of rescuing and angsty teenage “you wouldn’t understand” conversations. Liked the heroine. Did NOT like how the dude swooped in and took over for her running the household. Take a seat, my guy! Then again, I read this book in one sitting so can’t complain too much.

Another winner from Mimi Matthews, surprise surprise!! Cozy and swoony, it really doesn’t get better.
A Convenient Fiction had a distinct summery romance feel, and I loved the connection between Alex and Laura. I enjoyed watching Alex go from perceived villain to hero. This book also explored Laura’s changing relationship with her friend Henrietta, which was an interesting addition to the story.
I was so excited to finally get a reunion between Alex and his Parish Orphan friends, and to also figure out what had been going on with Laura’s horrible solicitor. I loved how Tom Finchley’s involvement weaved in and out of the situation.

Well researched, accurate Victorian romance a la Georgette Heyer but with a touch of Charlotte Bronte gothic. Great character and relationship development including passion between the hero/heroine.
*Other than kissing, all the steam is 'off-page'.

I really enjoyed this book. I definitely think this is my favorite male love interest from the series so far. I can't decide between this book and The Matrimonial Advertisement being my favorite. I'd say, the characters are little more fleshed out in this story, but the plot is slightly more exciting in the first book.
I loved our heroine, Laura. She'd been through a rough time in her life. You could see her internal struggle between being a realist and daring to dream of something bigger. She was acting as the glue, holding her family together. I was rooting for her the entire time!
I loved Alex Archer as well. His internal conflicts and motivations made him so captivating. It was such a treat to see him slowly acknowledge his feelings for Laura.
The connection between the love interests was POWERFUL. From their first scene together, you could tell that these two people longed for each other. There were so many adorable, heartfelt scenes.
I also enjoyed the side characters. In my opinion, they completed the story and made the country village come alive.
If you're a fan of Jane Austen, then you'll probably enjoy this!

I am enjoying this series quite a bit. There's a bit more of Trollope here than in most modern romances (Henrietta and George feel very much in that mode). And while this installment has less in the way of plot, the characters are real and complex. I also appreciate that the second act turn doesn't require some sort of out of character extreme response from either of them, just a bit of complexity and uncertainty.
