Really good. A lot of different small story points to keep track of and it gets a little dry but the climaxes are always worth it.

In the Ryan-verse, if the Soviet Union does something awful, it's because they're an evil society that has rejected god and therefore acknowledges no objective moral code. If the United States does something awful, it's an unfortunate but necessary sacrifice in order to uphold our higher values, which are in no way tarnished by the buckets of blood which sometimes, regrettably result.

Another excellent Clancy novel when he was in his writing prime. Extremely detailed - almost excruciatingly so when describing the details of the nuclear subs - but a riveting story. Again, most everyone has read it or has seen the Sean Connery movie. A classic.

finally read this book after watching the movie many times. Maybe its because of that I was disappointed with the book (i.e. kept thinking back to the movie).

The story itself is much more complex than the movie as it involves the Brits and not just the Soviets and Americans. Other than that, the book is not just about Jack Ryan (as in the movie), but other characters played a significant portion within the book (i.e. Skip Taylor - the submarine expert).

I could go on and on about how does it compare with the movie, but I'll stop here with the comparison.

In terms of the book, the first two thirds were good, but the final third was somewhat thin especially the last part about how the russian attack sub tried to sink the Red October. I just thought that part wasn't all that well developed.

Overall a good read.
