I really enjoyed this riveting espionage and military thriller. The only thing that I didn't like was that there were a few spots where the detail was a little over the top. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

When I read this in the Boston Logan International Airport, I received approving nods of acceptance from dozens of dads. I blinked, and suddenly I found that I was fifty years old. I had a mortgage and a project car. I understood what it is to receive mail from AARP. Then I blinked again, and I was back to the present. I had seen my future, and it was warm…I’m going to reread Red October now.

The technicalities overwhelmed me so much, I gave up. One year later, I picked it up again and couldn't put it down.
The subplots (pun intended) and converging storylines were what really made this book great. This is dramatic irony at its best! I also enjoyed seeing these amazingly clever schemes unfold. Not just by the militaries, but by the president, doctor, and FBI agent too. All in all, this is highly recommended!

My first experience with Jack Ryan. (I appreciate that he's a fellow bookworm who is thrust into these action sequences by fate.) Compelling storyline, and it does make me want to watch the movie, but stars have to be knocked off for all the technical jargon, acronyms, and military strategy. It was too much at times for a casual reader.

Fantastic book - Clancy did a wonderful job setting up a story and keeping your turning pages in this tense, military thriller. A slow, but well written book. Gets into the weeds of submarine structures and systems sometimes, but this successfully both teaches the reader about subs and adds to the story. Definitely will be reading another work by Clancy.

A classic thriller of a story. Clancy is excellent at making the reader feel like they are part of the story, and includes a number of small details that make the characters come to life. The twists and turns make the story more believable than others in this genre, and the realism of Navy life makes this an enjoyable read.
