im trying not to resent my father for making me read a 479 page book about russian submarines

Worth missing a night's sleep over.
medium-paced

It's been nearly 20+ years since I read this book. Even though the technology seems incredibly dated, Clancy's story still holds up. Exciting. One helluva yarn.

I read this as a teenager after the movie came out. Loved the movie, but the book was harder, as a teenager, to follow because it's very technical, tactical, and military. Still, it's a good story line and great characters. I would probably need to re-read it as an adult to give better stars on it, probably 3.5 from memory.

I don't typically read thrillers, but I had seen the movie for this one, so I decided to give it a try. And to be completely honest, it wasn't my favorite Tom Clancy book. It was very technical and slow moving, but it was very interesting to read about how things function on a submarine. I would recommend this book for people who know the terminology of submarines, or at least get a guide before you read this :).

DNF. About 90 pages in.

Man, this was so disappointing. I’d read rainbow six back when I was a kid, and it took me all of about 2 or 3 weeks to blast through all 900 odd pages, and I didn’t even read books then! But this, good lord, it was brutal. I am usually a sucker for techno thrillers but this works better than any sleeping pill on the market. Literally, took me about 7 minutes per page. That’s not gonna cut it. The tipping point for me tho was Clancy would introduce a character, spend about 4 pages reciting their entire history from the point of birth, up until that point in the story, have them say like 2-4 lines of dialogue, then they go away, never to be seen again. He did this with basically every character! No wonder this book was so unnecessarily long. Maybe you’ll have better luck than I with it.
