This more of a political thriller than an action book (for lack of a better term). I enjoyed it but it took me along time to read with all the details that Tom Clancy puts in. Since my style is to never gloss over anything, I was constantly looking up terms and details on the internet or asking my submariner friend.
I would recommend it if you don't mind putting the time in.

I've heard about this book for what seems like forever. It's just one of those titles I've always known about but never picked up to read for myself. Until PBS put out its list of one hundred best loved books and I decided to challenge myself to reading the ones I hadn't read already.
I can certainly see how this made the list. The main character is pretty likeable. I appreciated that he wasn't some huge action hero with muscles, that he wasn't particularly suave or cool or particularly good-looking, and that during an action scene he vomited after taking a life. But he wasn't exactly an everyman, either. He was highly intelligent and observant, seemed good with people and loved his kids. All the nautical stuff went over my head but anyone who knows about submarines will surely appreciate it on a level I can't.
I liked all the different set pieces and though I did lose track of what was happening between each piece, it was at least nice that the narrative indicated when it was shifting to that next piece. The action sequences were great. I could easily visualize what was going on during the sea battles and when the vessels were in crisis. The climax was exciting and I didn't want to stop reading until it was over.
So yes, this was an excellent book, and very impressive that this was the author's first. I'll be reading more of Jack Ryan for certain.
