One of my favorite authors. This book did not disappoint. The story moved at a good pace and the plot was nice and solid.
I hope I don't really have to wait a year for book 2.
disclaimer: I received an ARC in book form, but instead waited for an audiobook version to become available.

It was pleasing to read a fantasy novel not set in a pseudo-medival world. That was novel.
But, this is clearly book 1 in a series. We get introduced to all the main characters and the story has been set in motion. It doesn't seem as if the plot from here is going to be anything particularly new.

I enjoyed reading this, infact, it was quite a quick read for me. The worldbuilding and characters were exceptional for the most part. My three most disliked characters are the fane, the prince and Gryndal, I'm still trying to figure out my feelings for Trilos, Nyphron, and Malcolm . I'm also a little ambivalent about the Raithe and Persephone romance, he fell for her too quickly for my tastes, it seems a little forced. I'm here for the Gifford and Roan romance on the other hand.
I'm excited to read the next installation of the series.
Spoiler
(especially after that last page where it was revealed the Malcolm was Nyphron's slave and was ordered to kill Shogan)I'm excited to read the next installation of the series.

I loved this book! I’ve heard Sullivan’s name many times but never read his works. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I’m eager for more! The only hesitation is whether I should go back and start with his first book or continue on in this series which is a prequel of sorts to the Ryria Chronicles.
This book in particular was a fun blend of fantasy, fairytale, and ancient mythology. The world was unique, intriguing, and all around different from many traditional tropes of the genre. Can’t wait to continue on!
