So I really want to write a review of this book because it's the best thing I've read in a while but.. I can't wait to jump into the next one plus I can't form coherent thoughts right now.

This book surprised me! It felt like an older type fantasy book, like the ones I loved as a kid. The usual fantasy tropes were there but weren't irritating. Sometimes a modern word would crop up which would jar things a little bit. But on the whole thing story was good!!! It was also fantastic to read a fantasy book without a stupid, stroppy teenager as the main character.

A perfect fantasy novel, consisting of:
- Great development of characters you quickly become attached to
- Witty and often very humorous dialogue
- A great premise
- A plot that keeps you on your toes, with twists and turns just when you've grown complacent thinking you can predict what will happen next
- An interesting universe with a nicely etched-out history that I'm looking forward to exploring in Sullivan's other Riyria books

This was my first time reading anything by Michael Sullivan, and I am immensely impressed! He's a very talented writer and world-builder and I'm eager for the release of [b: Age of Swords|18052164|Age of Swords (The Legends of the First Empire #2)|Michael J. I really like this author's style. He just knows how to tell a good story.

Another reviewer was complaining this felt recycled and that there's nothing new here. I won't directly refute that- the races are the same as Lord of the Rings, Suri felt an awful lot like San from Princess Mononoke, etc, but they're still building blocks in a really engaging story. I do find the magic system in this universe to be pretty unique, in my experience.

I love that this series is shaping up to have more female characters than Riyria Revelations had.
