So it's been about 6 months since I finished this book and I'm still wishing he had put all six of them out at the same time. Granted it wasn't mind blowingly awesome like some other fantasy books but not everyone can be George R R and last time I checked George wasn't able to finish an entire series before he started torturing us with the cliffhangers.
I am super excited to see what Sullivan does with this series since he has taken the time to think the entire thing through before letting us read it.
The book had decent enough world building and an engaging story and characters. I can't wait to put the next one on the request list at work!

I received and ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The book I received was an uncorrected proof, but even so, I would rate it as a solid 4. In my updates I mentioned my love for the characters and how humor was so brilliantly infused into the dialog. This, and the fact that I continuously wanted to pick up the book to find out what happened, earned it the 4 stars.
Another reviewer mentioned that some things were predictable in the story, and I would have to agree with them. Obviously not everything, otherwise it would have been boring, but that's why I didn't rate it higher than a 4.
Michael J. Sullivan does a great job tying up loose ends so that the book feels complete, but he also gives you a little peak at something more right at the end just to keep you interested. Well done, Michael, well done.
And I wasn't kidding when I said I wanted to be Arion in the movie adaption of this book :)
Okay, Brin would be cool too.

What a pleasant surprise.
Having read all of Michael Sullivan's Riyria Books, I was hesitant to get into this new series simply because I LOVE the Riyria characters. Reading this book further solidified Michael Sullivan as a favorite, because all of the things I loved about Riyria were transferred onto this book with an entirely new cast and remarkable different subject matter.
It definitely delivers.

Kay so I've been on a role with finding literary gems. Sullivan has such a way with words; his world is compelling, the characters feel real and they really do drive the story along. But more than anything else the language is immersive and poetic. One of the easiest ways to sell me on a book is beautiful imagery in a fantasy setting and Sullivan delivers. This book is also teeming with wonderful quotes. I just highly recommend it for fantasy readers who like to be brought into the adventure.
Enjoyable but absolute bog standard competent pulp fantasy series from plot, character and prose stance.
A few nice bits, some real clunkers to balance it out in the series or little twists. There is a big part in the later books that takes the plot in a direction that's actually quite novel for this sort of book.
Great cover as well. Literally wouldn't have picked it up if it hasn't been for that cover.

A solid start to a book series. I was afraid it wouldn't be anything more than a basic medieval fantasy but the author managed to introduce some interesting characters along the way and turned everything a bit on its head and I appreciated that. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Not especially deep but a very fun, interesting, and well written book. I found the world and characters to be very interesting and entertaining and the plot good. My only problem with the writing was that 2 characters opened the book and were very central to the plot early on, but then almost entirely dissapeared in the middle third of the book. This was strange. Still worth a read for fantasy fans though
I received this from the author as part of a beta read. As this was new for me, I think it made reading the story different, knowing that some aspects could be changed later.
Michael Sullivan has wrote an engaging tale that takes place in the world of Riyria, albeit a very long time ago. The story takes on topics such as racism as well as a caste-type society. The characters are well written and there are even a few surprises here and there.
There is something for everyone, political intrigue, hack and slash, magic battles and monsters. I have high hopes for the rest of this series and can't wait to see whats in store for Seph, Raithe, Nyphron and the rest of the cast.
