Didn't really sound like my cup of tea, but thought my husband might enjoy it, so we started it while on a car trip. Didn't grab either of us and we quickly moved on.

It's a simple fantasy fable, but it feels like the tipping point. You can feel larger mechanics being established; this one just gets the ball rolling. The magic system and the world building are vague at times. This is admittedly a spin-off trilogy. But the author did say one could wade in without knowledge of the other books. I'd say that's about half true, you pick up a lot of it as you go. Still, the characters are rewarding to follow, and the final act is violent, tense and thrilling.

This was incredibly old school but didn't read as such the way Robert Jordan reads like it was written by a man and quite a long time ago at that, you know what I mean? It read fresh and familiar at the same time. I loved it.
The fact that the greatest conflict of this book was basically human drama - in the midst of newly discovered characters' abilities to kill 'gods' and a much bigger in scope war that's only just begun to brew - was somehow so endearing and weirdly enchanting that I am now sold on Michael J. Sullivan after just one book penned by him.
An inredibly strong start to a series I am sure I am going to devour in no time!
