DNF @ 79%
Tried so hard to finish by turning the speed up to 2.50x. Just couldn't do it.
There was no flow. Every part felt forced; rage for women is understandable but the rage at everyone made me feel like my head was going to be the next one to go with the irrational anger. The characters just lost their spark.

I really want to like this series because I think it’s got a great concept, but it feel so underdeveloped to me. Whenever the story starts to build and there could be some complexity or serious plot building the author throws in a sex scene and moves on.

Sigh… I really wanted this to go differently. I wanted to DNF this book so bad, so many times, but I persisted since the last part of the first one made me like it. This one however was a dud for me. It was too all over the place and honestly the whole “witches fight the patriarchy” bit should have been played up sooner cause it felt awkward bringing it up halfway through.

I feel like we lost our way here in this second installment. I thought we would be getting more meaningful background stories but they felt lacking, especially Adrian’s.

I’ll say what I’m sure everyone else has said, unnecessary amounts of spice STILL. I literally skipped over most of those scenes in order to get to some sort of plot. There is no point to it. Other books like Raven Kennedy’s Plated Prisoner have meaningful intimacy scenes between the main characters that are still spicy. This however is just too much.

The last 60 pages were, yet again, the best part of the book. Getting there was just SUCH a pain. I doubt I will read book 3 when it comes out, and I’m not even gonna try her other series. Just not my thing.

What a let down, Adrian and Isolde became annoying with their constant fighting and the book ends right in the middle of a scene. This book was obviously just filler for whatever happens in the next book.

I was super excited for this book, as I read King of Battle and Blood in September 2022 and enjoyed it immensely! I was pretty disappointed in book 2. I read the paperback, finished it and was like, “…did I miss something? Why does it feel like they hate each other again?” So I decided to listen to the audiobook on Hoopla and I see I missed nothing. I loved watching Isolde and Adrian fall in love in KoBaB and I feel like QoMaM jerked them like 10 steps back. Isolde even asked if they’re just going to fight and fuck. That’s literally all they do, I don’t recall a conversation that neither one of them was defensive or trying to hurt the other with their words.

I also noticed that Isolde is extremely rude. I think she’s only nice to Violeta, Ana, and her other hand maid whose name escapes me. In KoBaB I thought her rudeness was due to being ripped away from her home and having to come to terms with that fact that she loves the person she spent her whole life hating and learning awful things about the kingdom she thought she knew. But nope! She’s just rude all the time.

I’ll finish the series when the next book comes out cuz I can’t just drop a series like that but I really hope book 3 makes Isolde kinder and the 2 of them work on talking like a normal married couple.

I’m putting this book down and on hold. About 34% through and I’m not into it. There is no character development. The romance is awful. I feel no depth to the main leads. Their relationship gives me the ick.
I want to know what is happening to the MFC but I cannot get passed the cringe of most of this book. So disappointed so far ! I loved the first book
