This book was cute and sweet, but the pacing in it was an absolute wreck and there was very little character development.
I did absolutely adore all of the Russian folklore tidbits though.

This book is fun. It is a book full of adventure, an obvious bad guy, some more complicated morally gray area characters, and a strong, brave heroine. It is also a book about friendships, community, and fighting for what is right. All things that usually work for me really well. While I enjoyed this, I did feel it was a little overlong and there were certain plot points at the end I didn't love. However, there were things I thought were done really well, such as Anya's Jewish faith and the idea that power needs to be challenged. In the end it was a middle of the road read for me, but it is one I will certainly be recommending to dragon and fantasy adventure lovers I know!

Still searching for a relatable Russian story. Even a little bit. I liked the unusual setting of way far back in history, but it again did nothing for me and I couldn't wait to just get through it.

Well-written fantasy, based in an alternate 10th century Russia. Addresses the historical treatment of Jews in Russia (hint--it wasn't good) and Russian village life. I loved the way magic was handled in the book. The one thing I wished for was a glossary, which would have made it easier to keep all the Russian words and the magical creatures straight.

Sweet story with strong girl protagonist who stays true to her own belief system when encountering a bully. Addresses prejudices against Jews in Kievan Russia and incorporates contemporary Norwegian words. Encouraging friendship themes. At times suspenseful and scary. Good for readers ages 8-12.
