Not my favorite of the Bosches so far. The whole trip to Hong Kong seemed so improbable to me. I'm getting to where I like Mickey more than Harry....

Another good listen from Connelly featuring Harry Bosch. It's been interesting to see how the books differ from the series.

Bosch Goes Abroad

The Hong Kong portion of the novel seems more like a brief excursus for a case that mostly focuses on an LA crime. David Chu is not as compelling a character (not surprising given that he does not stick around as Bosch's partner for long).

A lot of loose ends and character arcs are resolved in such a way that it almost feels like Connelly wanting to reboot things.

Oh Harry the trouble this book brings you. Harry is assigned the murder of an Asian businessman and it points to the Triad. The Triad is chinesse for the Mob in NYC. It uses the same shakedowns and tatics to get businessman to bend to their bullying. As Harry investigates this case, it leads him to Hong Kong. He recieves two phones that will ever change his life. As we know Harry is like a dog to a bone when a case gets under his skin. This one is so far under his skin, he commits acts that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Even though that made me sad, I still greatly enjoyed this book. Connelly is a master storyteller and even when Harry's actions make you mad, sad or even happy, you are still rooting for him. I can't wait to see where his life leads in the next book.

Yay for lowered expectations! I was disappointed by The Scarecrow, read a pretty bad review of this one, and decided to read it anyway. And I enjoyed it. Trying to avoid spoilers, but I will say that I was quite pleased with the fact that all the threads didn't knit together as neatly as they usually do, which often ends up feeling implausible if tidy.

Most implausible Bosch novel so far and the audiobook performance was just awful.

I have loved this Bosch series. But I didn't like what happened in this one and I thought the emotion that should have been there wasn't.

LA police detective Harry Bosch works the case of a murdered Chinese convenience store owner. Security camera footage and help from Asian Gang Unit Detective Chu lead him to the Triad, an extortion gang rooted in ancient Chinese tradition. But as Harry closes in, he receives a threat to back off and a video email attachment from his daughter, apparently kidnapped in Hong Kong where she lives with Harry's ex-wife (and forever love) Eleanor. In Hong Kong, Harry frantically pieces together clues with the help of Eleanor and her new man to locate Maddy, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Back in the states, Harry must deal with the guilt of mistakes made.

Fast-paced and cleverly plotted. Contains significant police procedure detail - an odd combination of new and relatively old (cell phone) technology. The audio narration by Len Cariou is too labored for the pace of the book but does reflect Harry's old-school style. The book's appeal lies in the intricate story and Harry's new role as the father of a teenage daughter.
