Wow, I had no idea that Barrie was such a gifted writer. And such a sly sense of humor! I was fascinated with contemplating who the intended audience was originally because it's incredibly violent and bloody with Peter and all the boys killing dozens of pirates. There's even a reference to an orgy. It felt like an adult novel written in the style of a children's fairy tale. Minus a star due to the absolutely disgusting racism.

Read for my 'Outstanding' N.E.W.T in History of Magic 2019 #magicalreadathon. Prompt - Read a classic. Career choice - Ministry of Magic, Department of Mysteries Worker. Still to this day children wait by their bedroom windows for Peter Pan and await eternal childhood. A story that will be loved through the ages.

5 1/2 stars!

I bought a beautifully illustrated copy the complete and unabridged Peter Pan when I was in NYC last weekend. Today I sat down and read the entire thing and found myself giggling at the sarcasm and descriptions of characters and captivated by the intensity and wonder of the adventures this book contains. If you haven't you should read it. You'll realize that movies like Hook, Disney's Peter Pan, Finding Neverland, Peter Pan (broadway), and Peter Pan (2003) each contain just PIECES of the complete story. When you read the book and see them all combined, you'll fall in love with the story more than ever before.

I enjoyed the writing, so quirky. How did I go my whole life & not read this?

This book is not to be taken seriously. Many other reviews talk about decision and racism, but I would argue that it is making fun of these things as much as it's a product of the time it was written. The writing is beautiful and the imagery is amazing.

Man, I just could not get into this book. I get that it's a children's book and I'm clearly too old for that demographic. However, I could not even imagine reading this to a kid. It's so whimsical that I could not tell what the characters were doing. Is it a fanciful description or an actual event that's taking place? You hear common words and phrases but nothing links them into a coherent story.

Also, the only characters I liked even a little bit were the parents. Peter is a complete tool (which I had been warned about), all of the Lost Boys are mindless followers, Tinkerbell is an attempted murderer (possibly successful in the past), and the three main kids had very little discernable personality. Wendy was very "mothering", I suppose, but that's not much of a motivation when your "kids" are complete strangers. There may be more to Hook later on (I kind of dug the crocodile hunting him bit) but I couldn't be bothered to get that far.

I guess I'll keep my copy, since it's a cool faux leather-bound, but I can't imagine finishing it or recommending this to anyone else. Not to disparage those of you who love this story. You guys go for it and have a good time. I've got a huge TBR to tackle and would rather move on.
