this definitely felt more like it was a volume of rwby than after the fall did and that definitely contributed to my enjoyment of the book. also, justice for sage who got no pov chapters, the only one of the main 8 to not have one

A large improvement in pacing and plot over its predecessor, I am definitely glad I decided to give this one a shot after being less than excited reading "After the Fall". This book build greatly on the already established team CFVY and SSSN and flushes out an area of Remnant that we have yet to explore in the show or the first novel. Especially considering where volume 8 of the show ended I am pleased to have been able to dive deeper with this book and hope to see the stories of team CFVY and SSSN continue soon.

This book definitely had a stronger plot than the first one, and the first few chapters didn’t slog on so it was easier to get hooked. I liked the idea of the Crown, even if character development wasn’t at the forefront so much this time.
The little character development this time around was entirely for Sun, and I’m not complaining since I love him. I liked the references to Sun Wukong from Journey to the West, like his cousin being Tanzang.
The thing keeping this book from five stars was that there were some weird out of character moments? Like when Fox and Yatsuhashi dangled Neptune over water despite it literally being his worst fear and their excuse is that they’re in a bad mood. That felt weird. It was a brief moment, but almost made me put the book down for the day because of how uncharacteristically mean it was
But the humour this time around was better. More of the jokes landed for me instead of making me think the writer was trying too hard to be comedic.
Now if only the actual show could improve like this.
