Soooo, the real horror of this book isn’t the cult at all. The awful part of this was the life she lived later on with her mother and her mother’s abusive boyfriend. She was way better off with the cult.
The cult was boring, as far as cults go. The books opens with the time leading up to when the world is supposed to end, but once that doesn’t happen and life goes back to normal and we learn what that life was like, not much happens. She reads a lot from her diary and I could have done without a little less of that.
It really picks up later when she’s living in this horrible abusive situation, and I felt so angry on her behalf. Angry at her mother’s boyfriend who was a despicable person, but also at her mother for enabling the situation and just willfully misunderstanding everything. How horrible. I’m so glad she finally landed with a guardian who actually cared about her.

There is a lot of discussion of sexual abuse in the second half of this memoir.

I am in awe of people like Turner who deftly and candidly reveal their childhood trauma on the page.
It took me a while to finish the book because it was hard to imagine going through these things as a child so I stopped reading and would pick up something different. Then the book expired and I had to wait until it was available again.
