This made me want to read more historical fiction. It felt realistic in its portrayal of the oppression of underrepresented groups without feeling graduitously traumatic and the characters all felt so real.

I went into this book pretty much blind, not knowing what to expect.
It was recommended by a friend, and wow, wow, wow.

The dynamic between the women in this book is amazing, even though they are going through hell, they still manage to joke and banter. The strong female friendships in this book melt my heart. These are some tough women❤️

If you are on the fence, give it a go.
Its not fast paced, but It keeps you interested the whole way through,
Because you want to know how it ends.

Loved this book from beginning. First part of a trilogy. Book group choice.

It’s a difficult read to get through, not because the story isn’t interesting or the writing is bad.. But the subject matter is heavy. The every day life of these characters feels so especially heavy, that it was hard for me to get through the first half.

However, having finished, I’m in better spirits about the second novel, to continue Amara’s story and see how everything else unfolds. I think I still need a rest from the heavy content, though, frankly, and will probably read something a bit more lighthearted before continuing the series.
