As a middle and high schooler, I was always weirded out by seeing my peers dating. There were two kids dating in my 10th grade class who mostly only interacted with each other and I felt like they were living in a parallel universe I did not understand, thinking I would rather focus on my grades & hang out with my friends than have my whole live revolve around This One Person.
Lucy puts this feeling into words and helps the reader relate to it in a way I had never seen depicted in fiction before. Not angry at third wheeling or jealous, just struggling to understand what the deal is about having a romantic partner. Ground-breaking stuff. I adored the figure of the librarian, who supports Jen's passion for art and seems to have an innate understanding of what kids are like and what they enjoy. Lovely woman, I want to be more like her.
From what I have heard, the asshole stepdad was even a bigger feature in the first book - which I haven't had the chance to read yet. Without even knowing that, I found myself feeling frustrated by the character's absolute lack of understanding/refusal to understand Jen.
