This book was amazing. Loved every bit of it. It’s a topic I never really looked into or heard much about, and I find it so interesting. Definitely recommend.

It was fun to revisit this older novel with a modern lens. About half of us had read it before, and most enjoyed the lush, atmospheric writing and immersive setting. For me, the scene-building was gorgeous, but the characters felt a little underdeveloped. I also found myself unsettled by some of the controversies around how geisha culture was portrayed.

Overall, a beautifully written book that sparked great discussion, even if it didn’t fully deliver the depth I was hoping for.

The book objectively is entertaining and a good read. However, another Asian tale written by another white man's POV. While the story is loosely based off of a real geisha, he heavily sexualized her story.
