This is a really good book and a good example of young people written well. There needs to be more books about young queer kids that have happy endings. I like the ending it is sweet and well deserved.

Sunny has a bad heart and so has to undergo a heart transplant.   When she wakes she sees her long-lost mother for the first time in eight years. On her first day at the beach since the surgery she meets  Quin, the new girl in town whom she may have feelings for.

I Loved this book.  Listening to the narrator, feminine voice, as they tell about Sunny is such a rooting for her to have her complete her mission.  Have her expand her friend group.  Have her reconnect with her mom.  The characters are lovable.  The pacing of the book is at a good rate.   It really is a cute story of 12-year-old world changing after she got a heart.

It was a really sweet book about a twelve year old who accepted a heart transplant. Her medical issues aren't the focus of the novel, although they do provide context and serve as the background for the story. I would definitely recommend it! It's a touching middle-grade novel about coming-of-age and realizing that she might not be straight, which takes her some time to unpack. It's a story about friendship, crushes, and being brave :)

3.5. This book had almost too much going on but it was still a great story.

A beautiful story about learning who we are and who we are becoming. Despite being a fully grown adult, this book was so relatable and I feel that anyone reading would be able to draw some parallels between their own lives and Sunny's. Heart-warming, dramatic, and full of fireworks. I intend to be giving copies of this to the little people in my life.

I got this book because I was really hoping I could relate to Sunny as someone with a heart condition of my very own and it is so rare to see heart conditions talk about in fiction. The sad thing is due to that fact I can tell you just how wrong this book was about those aspects. It was painfully clear that the author not only has no experience with a heart condition but that she didn’t even bother to do some research. I realize that my experiences are not universal but the things that she was getting wrong were basic things that anyone who bothered to do a shred of research would know. I won’t waste anyones time by listing all of the basic things she got wrong when it comes to the physical part of a heart condition and will instead tell you about the emotional things she failed to even consider.

For starters she didn’t look at the way a condition of this magnitude would effect a girl at such a young age outside of the “slight” inconvenience of having to stop swimming for a bit. (which btw is actually very highly incurred as any cardiologist would high recommend swimming because it is a great exercise that can strengthen your heart with out causing damage) She took little to know time to talk about how the scares would effect a young child’s self image or how experiences that level of trauma would effect their emotional state. Yes, Sunny’s emotions were talk about but it was in regard to her mother or her feeling towards other girls not her feelings about her condition.

Now despite how wrong this book was in regards to the heart condition I did enjoy the book. I liked how it discussed sexuality and I loved Sunny’s journey of finding herself and how she felt about other girls. I related to all of that very strongly. I also liked the discussion between Sunny and her mother and how that effect Sunny as I also grew up with a very absent parent. I felt her journey there also seemed very real.

That all being said this is a good book and it is very cute. If you are looking for a cute queer middle grade then defiantly give this book a read but don’t expect anything relatable when it come to the condition if you are someone with a heart condition especially if you are a younger reader. This book does not show case what it is like living with a heart condition and don’t let it trick you into thinking it is. Otherwise this is a great queer book I would recommend.
