Actually 4.5 stars.
Campbell does a great job of making the reader feel connected. I found myself so angry in parts of this book that I had to step away and remember that it wasn't real. Awesome character development and really captures the "small-town" character.

#1 on my "to read" list for over 4 years and I finally get to check it off!

This book was a quick read that captured my attention, but the one character I found the most intriguing was the least developed -- more about Nicole!

This was a wonderful story reminiscent of DH Lawrence in theme of peoples' ties to the land (but not much else) as the plight of the independent farm in rural Michigan is central to the story. There is a quirky cast of characters neglected by most around them, but making their own way through life nonetheless.

Somethings just come together. It's Michigan before the onslaught of winter. Rural versus subsurban. I like it.

A wonderful novel - moving, funny, and one of the best looks at midwestern farm communities I've read. My review is here on my blog.

Only picked this up because I needed a “Q” for an A-Z reading challenge I’m doing this year. It’s set in Michigan, so I connected with that part. I really liked it, then there was a chapter where horrible things were happening and I almost put it down I was so upset, but I’m glad I pushed on because by the end I liked it again.

The sense of history in this book was really great. The juxtaposition of the Potawatomi, farmers, and suburbanites was interesting and present throughout the book.
