I am sorry to say that I did not enjoy this book. I went into it expecting an engaging story with a plot-line that would unravel complex ideas. What I got instead was a simple premise and a narrator that rambled on and on about his experiences and his ideas about shame, punishment, judgment, friendship, society. It felt all over the place and I just couldn’t follow anything.
Albert Camus has been hailed as one of many important literary figures in Western society during the 20th century. Reading his novel The Fall, I sensed that brilliance in how he writes about ideas. He’s very passionate about what he does, yet I wish I could unravel what he is saying and get a a gauge at what he is going for because I have no idea what I just read (which, to be fair, is mostly my fault as I just didn’t read slowly enough and I neglected to truly take my time with this book given that I just wanted to finish it in one sitting to make progress with my Goodreads reading goal).
The structure was interesting: our narrator is a former Parisian lawyer speaking to another person about his regrets, his flaws while also condemning society and others at the same time. There’s no plot whatsoever, it’s just long ramblings and monologues and a few descriptions of the setting. I just wish there was something exciting about the novel other than the ideas. I found myself mostly bored and again, that may be because I assumed this was going to be a thrilling fun fiction read. What I should have expected was a very introspective novel of ideas rather than of a plot.
The novel isn’t bad by any means. It’s just not for me. I don’t fault Camus because he wasn’t aiming for a fun entertaining novel. I just wish I was more bothered to care about that sort of thing.
