OK, I did not expect to finish this book so quickly, but guess it was just right. That said, it wasn't all that great, and I won't be ''reading'' the rest of the series.

This book had hung out in my Audible Library for nearly two years. I've started listening to the books I can't return, so I have those out of the way, and this was one of them.
One of the reasons I've put off listening to it, was because I had other series going on, and I didn't want to have too many series' to follow at one time, feeling I had to split the credits I had, as I try to not buy too many extra credits - I have so many unread books already! I don't need more.

So, anyway! To the book!
This is the first book in a really long fantasy series, but at least each book aren't an epic, so there's that.
I think I would have really liked this if I listened to it when I bought it. As it were, I've matured a bit beyond this type of fantasy.

I found it really predictable.
The characters were rather flat and easily mixed into one another.
There were all the fantasy tropes one could expect, and I ended up rolling my eyes a few times at how naive and stupid the characters appeared.
There was a looooot of backstory. Too much at times, to be honest, which easily made me forget the actual story.

So, yeah. This book wasn't for me, but I expect a fair few fantasy-geeks would enjoy it. And it wasn't all that bad. It was entertaining enough for me to listen to 3 hours of it at a go while emptying boxes, so that's a thing.

Enjoyable read that I had a hard time putting down. The plot never dragged, and each new twist and revelation felt like a surprise. Will likely be reading more in this series.

Rating 3-3,5

While i did enjoy this book i had some issues with the writing, some stuff felt repetitive. Some other stuff bugged me as well... some issues could partly be related to that i read it on the kindle app and I'm not that fond of reading in e-book formats and rather read books in physical form. But it was still very enjoyable, it had a fast pace and quick to read through, and i will continue reading this series.

Also i need to say that the covers for these books are gorgeous.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the pacing. Could use a little more description though, but all around pretty awesome.

DNF [38% completed]

There's slow build-ups. There's setting up and putting into place the pieces to then get the story moving. Then there's this. Where 38% into the novel and there's only been one scene of conflict or challenge for the main character to overcome, and it all happens "off-screen"! Maybe I just like novels where 'stuff' actually happens, characters do 'things' and 'things' happen to them. Maybe my outlook is, that in cases where "the first half of the novel is just build-up but I promise it all pays off in the end" may indeed be the case, but if all of the first half of the novel is still shit... then half of your novel is still just shit regardless of it being necessary to wade through in order to get the (checks series' page....) TEN SEQUELS... No thanks.

I won't return to finish this. I might give this author one more opportunity with their 'The Risen Shard' novel. But that'll be a long time from now once I've cleansed by palate of this bitter-cardboard taste this novel gave me.
