The book started good but faded pretty fast. All in all I wouldn't recommend because it felt incomplete - not in a good way.

This is about a young couple in the first year of their marriage living in the mountains in turn-of-the-century South Carolina. It's very simple and unsentimental, but it's a bit depressing. Life is so hard and there's very little joy. I enjoyed the book but I wouldn't rave over it. Julie is a wonderful heroine and it's a great depiction of the struggle life must have been in those days, but there just doesn't seem to be much else to the book.

Wow, what a compelling story. I finished it in two days, I just couldn't put it down. It's not exactly a happy story, but so real and gripping.
