Na een pagina of 50 heb je al meer dan genoeg aanleiding om te snappen waarom het woord "sadisme" is afgeleid van de naam van de schrijver, en dan moet je er nog 400.
Het is een intrigerend werk, voornamelijk omdat driekwart van het boek bestaat uit de inleiding en "de eerste maand", terwijl de volgende drie maanden en het slot slechts in vluchtige dagboekvorm zijn opgeschreven, overal voorzien van aantekeningen van de auteur - we lezen slechts een eerste versie.
Toch is er een punt waar de interesse in de psyche van de schrijver, de bron van enkel 20e-eeuws filosoof of extreme literatuur overtroffen wordt door excessief walgelijke beelden en situaties. Nergens in het boek is het conform welke norm dan ook, maar ook daar "voorbij lezen" heeft zijn grenzen.
Ik zou dit boek niet snel aanraden.

1. Kupa, kupa, kupa. Wszędzie kupa. To już się zrobiło w pewnym momencie nudne - wyliczanka kto jaką kupę zrobił i kto ją zjadł. I kto komu napierdział w usta (serio...)

- zgodnie z regułami książki, najlepsze na koniec - wyjąć serce, zgwałcić w powstałą dziurę, zaszyć wszystko z powrotem i potem patrzeć, jak ofiara umiera z głodu.
Geniusz, po prostu geniusz, płakałam z moim narzeczonym ze śmiechu.

4 libertines (that's what De Sade calls the people engaging in a kind of cruel and sex-focused hedonism) abduct a bunch of children to castle to have a 4 month long celebration of libertinage , which will end in the death of most of the children as well as most of the staff brought there . 4 Storytellers tell 150 stories about sexual preferences (passions), which include blasphemy, rape, incest, murder, necrophilia, etc.
The sexual acts are mostly described unemotionally and seem to mostly be just a list of bizarre sexual fetishes (the last 3 chapters where not finished and are thus quite literally just lists). Any sort of reflection about the happenings in the castle or in the stories are rarely found and thus if one is not to disturbed by the explicit descriptions (and maybe one who can only barely tolerate those and keep on reading is the perfect reader for this book), then the main problem of this book is just, that it is extremely boring.
Lastly in other reviews I have read, that the flaws of the characters where a main focus of the book. That is not really true. While the main focus of the book are thoughts and actions, that would seem to us quite flawed, the book does not share that moral evaluation and just describes them at best neutrally or even encourages the philosophy of the 4 protagonists.

The only redeeming thing is that it's kinda funny - like, if you put the child abuse to the side, the actual descriptions and the way the dialogue is written made some sections really funny to me. I couldn't take any of it seriously. Despite when I laughed out loud, the book felt rather pointless. It wasn't necessarily exciting and I was frankly disappointed. If you actually want something harrowing and thought provoking, go watch the movie instead.
Really more breadth than depth. Also all the characters feel depersonified. What a shame!

Me gustó porque creo que el Marques de Sade hace una critica al abuso de poder de cuatro hombres con puestos muy altos dentro de la politica; y que con recurso del pueblo logran pagar sus libertinajes ... Lo que no me gusto es la narración que se da a partir de los tipos de las pasiones; no soy ninguna puritana, y tal vez no entendí el trasfondo de esas descripciones, pero particularmente son demasiado grotescas...

I've read some depraved shit. But this amount of poop and descriptions of toothless hags fucking, I cannot take. Honestly enjoyed the essays on his life by the intro authors to be far superior than the text itself.
