Would have given it 2 stars if it hadn't started out strong. Well written but didn't care about any of the charachters and thought would have gotten more insight about Leland Sr. but didn't. By the end I just wanted it to be done and there were minor charachters with way too much detail, especially at the end.

since goodreads won't allow 6 stars, i may have go back and lower most of the other books i've read this year by 1 star. this is a phenomenal book.

It just wasn’t the right time for me to be able to get into a sweeping novel. I’d like to try it again another time.

This is a great sweeping literary novel in which every chapter is from a new character's perspective, which is innovative and fun, but also a lot to remember. All the characters are bound together by two yellow suit cases filled with money (supposedly), but could just as easily be filled with bricks and packing peanuts. When Leland Sr. walks off the top of a building he leaves behind two families and lots of questions. They've all heard the lore about the suitcases, but where are they? Set in the underbelly of Detroit this saga covers decades, fleshing out the plot story by story. Ultimately, it was a little too literary for me. There was times I just couldn't get into it even though the writing was superb. Interesting, just not always compelling for me.

Wow! This novel gave me so much, so many characters and life stories, I can’t wait until my friends read it so I can talk through it all. The author related mental health and drug use and family stress, and did so intimately and without over-dramatization.

Um, what? This book had too many characters and too many subplots, especially when trying to listen to the audiobook. Another random miss. Ah, well.

Definitely a character-doorway novel which I find so compelling, particularly when the writing is this clever and unique. Recommended.

Well written, maybe a little over written. It went a bit long and got a bit over the top.
